The Charles Kullman Papers contains clippings, correspondence, photos, press, magazines, radio broadcasting material, autographed materials, sheet music, screenplays and libretti, miscellaneous written items, personal ephemera, art work, sound recordings, and film.
Metropolitan Opera singer Charles Kullman (1903-1983) was an American tenor who had a successful career in North America, Europe, and South America. Kullman sang 25 seasons at the Metropolitan Opera, and was known for his roles Don Jose in Carmen, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, Walther in Die Meistersinger. After teaching at Indiana University (1956-1971) he retired to his hometown, New Haven, Connecticut. Kullman frequently performed for radio broadcasts and was contracted with Columbia Records.
His collection is currently being processed and a preliminary finding guide to the collection is being created. It will be updated as processing proceeds.
Kullman's commercial 78rpm discs will be digitized and be available for listening through the Discography of American Historical Recordings.
