Mamakos Family DionysiaTrust CollectionThe Mamakos Family DionysiaTrust Collection was inherited from John Afendras (1897-1976), a Greek-born classically-trained violinist who led a varied career in San Francisco musical circles as a musician, conductor and performer. Afendras emigrated from Greece to the US in 1913 and was the conductor of the San Francisco Municipal Band from 1956 to 1971.

The collection consists of several thousand 78rpm recordings from the 1920s through the 1940s, principally Greek, Turkish, Eastern European, Latin American, and classical recordings. The Mamakos Family donated the collection to the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2024.

Sound recordings in the Mamakos Family DionysiaTrust Collection are currently being cataloged and selectively digitized. Digital copies will be available through the Discography of American Historical Recordings (DAHR).
