Retratos y Relatos: Escritura creativa y exploración identitaria” (“Portraits and Stories: Creative Writing and Identity Exploration”)
UCSB Library is excited to present “Retratos y Relatos: Escritura creativa y exploración identitaria” (“Portraits and Stories: Creative Writing and Identity Exploration”), an exhibition that celebrates literary creativity as a pedagogical tool in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language..
The exhibition showcases a collection of texts written by UCSB students that reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of their authors, who reveal the complexity of their relationship with Spanish and its role in the construction of hybrid identities through their stories and poems.
The texts not only reveal the concerns and perspectives of these emerging and talented writers but also reflect the richness of Spanish as shaped by linguistic contact. The linguistic nuances enrich local varieties and offer insight into the complex social and cultural realities inhabited by multilingual speakers.
“Retratos y Relatos” was curated by Carmen Araujo (PhD Candidate in Spanish and Portuguese) and Evelyn Vera Flandez (PhD Candidate in Education). The exhibition stems from a creative writing workshop in Spring 2024, led by Professor Omar Ramírez-Pimienta (Spanish and Portuguese) and Professor Kara Brown (Creative Studies and Writing), followed by a creative writing course led by the curators in Summer 2024.
