Audio/Visual Materials
Restrictions on Use
Preservation copies of original A/V materials (films,
videos, and sound recordings) will be provided for in-house use at
no charge. Depending on media condition and availability of equipment,
not all items may be available. Originals are not available for playback.
Prospective users should contact the Department of Special Collections
to determine availability of listening/viewing copies of specific
A/V items, or for an estimate of the time needed to produce such copies.
Requests for reproductions of A/V materials are dealt with on a case-by-case
basis, subject to copyright status of the materials, and to staff
and equipment availability. The Department of Special Collections
reserves the right to limit the number of items from a particular
collection that will be copied for in-house or off-site use. Contact
the Department for current reproduction fees.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17) governs the making
of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under
certain conditions of "fair use" specified in the law (United
States Copyright Act, Section 108), libraries and archives are authorized
to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction of copyrighted material.
These standards for copying do not apply to or allow for the reproduction
of the following categories of copyrighted materials: (1) photographs
and pictorial or graphic works, except those published as illustrations
to text; (2) musical works; (3) sculptural works; and (4) motion pictures,
videotapes, and other audiovisual works, except those dealing with
the news. Copyrighted works that fall into these categories may not
be copied for patrons without the permission of the copyright owner.
All requests for permission to publish, quote from, present to a group,
or include excerpts in multimedia presentations any sound recording,
film, video, or other non-textual material, or any excerpt therefrom,
must be submitted in writing to the Head of Special Collections. Permission
may be given on behalf of the Department of Special Collections as
the owner of the physical items, but is not intended to include or
imply permission of the copyright holder, which also must be obtained.
The requestor assumes all responsibility for complying with U.S. copyright
restrictions applicable to these materials, and agrees to indemnify
the University of California, its Regents, and its employees from
and against any copyright infringement claims, suits, costs, or liabilities
arising from any use of the material copied.
